• IHWT Equine Training

The Irish Horse Welfare Trust (IHWT) has launched a new online Horse Care & Welfare course. The online version of the course has been developed following the success of the equine outreach courses which have been run by the IHWT over a number of years in various parts of Ireland including Moyross in Co Limerick, and Darndale, & Finglas in Co Dublin.

The online version of the course makes it far more cost effective for the IHWT to deliver, it also makes the course content accessible to a far larger number of potential participants.

The charity has been involved in equine education programmes for over 10 years and has put many young people through formal and non-formal training over that time.

The course comprises of eight online modules covering all of the basic elements involved in the correct care and management of horses and ponies:

    Module 1:

    • Horse behaviour and safe handling

    Module 2:

    • Horse health

    Module 3:

    • Grooming, tack, and rugs

    Module 4:

    • Care of the stabled horse and the grass kept horse

    Module 5:

    • Feeding horses

    Module 6:

    • Hoof care

    Module 7:

    • Illness and disease

    Module 8:

    • First aid

Two practical modules provide an opportunity to put the learning acquired in modules 1 - 8 above into practice.

The Online Horse Care & Welfare course is hosted on the Charity’s Learner Management System (LMS) which allows easy access from PCs, Laptops, Tablets and phones. The courses content is delivered through blended learning using text, diagrams, videos and voiceover. A quiz after each module provides assessment of participant progress and for overall group evaluation.

The course has been developed in association with RACE and CARE and it is hoped that it will also act as stepping stone for young people wishing to progress to a career in the equine industry.

The online course is available to be licensed to local authorities around the country, this may be particularly useful in areas where there are problems with wild or loose horses which are being tended to by locals. The online course can be delivered through local equine groups, community groups, and Garda outreach programmes and as mentioned above, covers all basic elements involved in the correct care and management of horses and ponies.
